Guidelines for Anagarikas
All lay meditators other than guests and resident Upāsakā, who wish to stay in the monastery, need to undertake training of Anāgārika. The training involves abiding by the following precepts.
One must refrain from intentionally depriving any organisms from life. This includes any visible entities like ants and mosquitoes. Repellants and mosquito nets can be used.
One must refrain from taking anything which is not given. This includes any property belonging to the monastery or individuals including flowers and fruits from trees.
One must refrain from sexually inappropriate behavior.
One must train in developing appropriate speech. The following must be taken into consideration - Oral silence is discouraged by Buddha in communal settings but one may reduce unnecessary interaction with others if it helps with the development of the mind. - Refraining from Lying, slandering, blaming, abusing, or any other type of wrong speech. - Refrain from indulging in a frivolous speech about politics, sports, military, and otherworldly topics. One may train in a discussion about subtle aspects of dhamma practice.
Usage of Alcoholic beverages and other intoxicants is prohibited within the monastery premise.
Refrain from eating after 12 pm and before dawn. Medicine that is not based on proteins and carbohydrates can be used. Juice or black tea can be consumed if available.
Wearing white clothes, avoid usage of perfume, scent, rings, wristwatches, necklace, caps, improper hairstyle or mustache, and beard grooming
Usage of phone and internet must be minimized and one must refrain from inappropriate shows. One can also deposit their sim card or mobile device to minimize distraction.
Usage of high or luxurious beds and seats is prohibited. Also when talking to monks the Anagarika may take appropriate seats.
Money, credit cards and expensive possessions must be deposited in the office and one must avoid using any digital forms of money transfer. Basic necessities like soap and toothpaste etc. can be provided by request from management.
Additionally one must abide by the rules which are specific to monastery which aim at harmony, sustainability and common interests of groups involved. This entails the following.
Permission will be given to stay for a duration of one months after undertaking 10 precepts. This can be renewed if there are no difficulties with one's precepts.
This is primarily an institution to revive monastic tradition in India. Anagarika must attempt to acquire knowledge about the dhamma and Vinay of Buddha and learn the appropriate behavior in dealing with sangha members.
Residents will be expected to participate in regular dhamma discussion, daily service, meditation interviews, and group sittings.
Use of electric kettle, heater or any high electricity consuming equipment is prohibited within rooms. In case of necessity permission needs to be taken.
These rules are specific to the resident lay practitioners. Different sets of rules will dictate the conduct of Bhikkhus, Samaneras, guests and kappiyas and upasakas.
