Guidelines for Ordination Aspirants

  • We do  not  give  temporary  ordination  to  any  applicants.

  • The applicant  has  to  progressively  train  himself  as an Upasaka(  lay  practitioner), Pandupalasa  (probation  period)  and  Samanera(novice  monk)  before  he  can receive  Upasampada(  higher  ordination).

  • Only  a  male  with  at  least  18  years of age  will  be  considered for  the  procedure.

  • The applicant  must  have  at  least  passed  12  grade  or  equivalent  education  in their  respective  countries.

  • The applicant  should  not  have  any  criminal  record.

  • The applicant  must  not  be  suffering  from  any  form  of  psychosis  or  mental disorder.

  •  The applicant  should  be  free  from  any  substance  abuse  for  over  6  months.

  • An applicant  must not have involved in creating a schism in any monastic commune.

  • If  an  applicant  has  committed  a  parajika  offence  while  previously  being  a Bhikkhu,  he  is  unqualified  for  receiving  ordination.

  • If  an  applicant  has  committed  an  unconfessed  Sanghadidesa  offence  while previously  being  a  Bhikkhu,  he  has  to  finish  his  probation  period  for  the duration  the  offence  was  kept  concealed. 

  • An applicant  must  be  free  from  any  loan  or  debt  to  private  or  public  institutions.

  • An applicant  cannot  be  accepted  till  he  is  legally  bound  to  any  military  or government  service  for  the  duration  of  any  unfinished  contract.

  • Due to rules  laid  down  by  The  Buddha,  people  afflicted  with  leprosy,  boils, eczema,  tuberculosis,  epilepsy  or  any  serious  chronic  or  incurable  disease cannot receive ordination. The same would be applicable to a person who is  physically handicapped, feeble, or deformed.

  • If an applicant has tattoos visible when fully robed containing words or  designs that are blatantly contrary to a bhikkhu's ideals, it would be wise to  have them removed.

  • The applicant must be at most 40 years of age at time of joining the training. Celibate practitioners and advanced meditators may be considered for some relaxation of this criteria under case to case basis.

  • The applicant must have a keen desire to learn and practice in accordance with dhamma-vinaya as taught by the Buddha. As such an individual must seek ordination only after he has gained confidence or understanding in relation to the teachings of the Buddha.
